S.O.S. EUROPEAN CITIZENSHIP EDUCATION. A brand new training to train teachers to teach Europe at school and be more “European”
ERASMUS K1 PROJECT
about the course
course description
The ERASMUS K1 Project presents a groundbreaking initiative: S.O.S. ECE (European Citizenship Education) – an innovative training program designed to equip teachers with the tools to effectively teach about Europe within school curricula, promoting a deeper sense of European citizenship.
European Citizenship Education remains largely absent from many educational systems across Europe. Despite the wealth of available resources from the European Commission, websites, and EU projects aimed at empowering teachers to incorporate “Europe at school,” the subject is yet to find widespread inclusion.
This training program aims to provide participants with a comprehensive understanding of EU guidelines and policies, establishing a common knowledge base while fostering a positive community spirit and critical thinking.
One crucial aspect of this training is the methodology. Traditional schooling often lacks the innovation required to enhance Non-Formal Education and adopt innovative approaches that transcend cultural barriers.
Current educational guidelines encourage teachers to enhance communication and make teaching more engaging, international, interdisciplinary, and enjoyable. Through ECE Education, teachers can evolve into more “European Educators,” initiating a transformative teaching process that expands networks, broadens perspectives, fosters cooperation, and develops innovative skills and competencies.
Increasing knowledge about Europe and its opportunities offers a broader perspective, facilitating participation in networks and enabling individuals to explain the happenings within the European Union and the wider world.
For years, JUMP has spearheaded the “We School Europe” project, engaging numerous schools across Europe and curating a training toolkit comprising tools and lesson plans adaptable to diverse contexts. As with all JUMP training sessions, a segment involves direct engagement with local schools, working closely with teachers and students.
The title “S.O.S.” signifies our commitment to providing teachers with a “Toolkit” of lesson ideas, methods, and practical and technological games, both existing and adaptable by teachers. This toolkit serves as a resource to integrate European themes into various subjects when relevant. ECE Education is cross-cutting and applicable across different educational levels, even facilitating debates in secondary schools. It can be effectively incorporated into school schedules when subject teachers are absent, enriching the curriculum with innovative European perspectives.
LEARNING GOALS:
- Familiarize with the European framework for European Citizenship Education and official sources, encompassing methods, guidelines, and digital tools
- Enhance understanding of the EU’s functioning, its institutions, and key content to facilitate comprehensive teaching about the EU
- Explore the progress of ECE education at the EU level and within different countries
- Engage with diverse lesson plans about the EU, integrating official EU sources with Non-Formal Education, Outdoor Education, and other innovative teaching approaches
- Collaborate with teachers from various countries to share potential developments and teaching ideas related to the EU and EU projects.
Target Group
Participants can be any teacher at any level of education working in a public or private school or educational institutions
program/Training Modules
INTRO/METHOD
Like all our programs, the present one is flexible and adaptable to special requests, depending on the subject taught or on the starting level of the participant.
Furthermore, in line with the JUMP Academy method, our courses are based on a strategic balance between formal and non-formal education, indoor and outdoor education and the team takes care of a very important aspect of international mobility which is the intercultural learning which we develop with short excursions and facilitating the interaction with local partners, businesses and citizens of our territory. Each local context has its own economy so it’s always useful, in training programs, to get in contact with concrete examples (experiential learning and real based learning).
We always try to connect our learners to local teachers and students to cooperate in developing innovation and networking for future projects. If possible, inside the program, a morning is spent inside a local school, visiting, observing, and cooperating in the realization of one or more lessons. The proposed program JUMP works, in European dimension and with an international spirit, at the local level and, according to the period of the training along the year and the weather, it is possible to change some sessions and add visits and meetings, in cooperation with our network of partners including schools involved in European projects).
