CODING@SCHOOL. Computational Thinking Development – Coding as a tool to build classroom interaction and develop students creativity

ERASMUS K1 PROJECT

In an ever changing world, we all know too well that innovation is the key to success.

More than ever, today teachers need to be up to speed with the latest trends and not fall behind and risk school dropout, boredom and bad behavior on behalf of students. In the past, it was enough to teach the common subjects such as math, science, history, and art. Nowadays students need new skills in order to be more employable, more innovative in the workforce, more creative in their ideas, more collaborative with their colleagues. In other words, they need the 21 st century skills.

Computer programming is one of these, it’s a fundamental skill for so many different applications, not just software development or cutting-edge research into artificial intelligence. It makes banking more accessible, smooths out supply lines, and creates those fantastic online experiences we love.

Another important skill is “Coding” which encourages you to use logic and algorithms to create a program. When facing a new challenge, you need to follow a logical approach to solve the issue. Coding enables you to train your logical ability.

How has coding changed our society?

From our IPhones to even our washing machines, coding is in our everyday lives.

Computer programming has been innovating every single industry since the beginning and has changed our everyday lives. From the creation of the internet to cars having satellite cameras, to even helping NASA launch rockets.

Why is coding important in the 21st century?

Coding (programming) at an early age is of great importance for raising new individuals that are equipped with 21st century skills instead of the generations which have rote-learning based education without questioning and have critical thinking skills.

How important is coding for the future?

Today, coding is necessary to develop the technologies that have become an essential part of our daily lives. As a result, several programming languages have emerged to help software engineers write the various applications we use. While learning any coding language can be helpful, some stand out from others. In our course, we show you the most updated apps to use in the classroom whether you already have some coding knowledge or are just starting to teach it.

How can coding improve the world?

Coding can be used to develop tools for monitoring energy usage and making adjustments as needed. Coding can create apps and websites that promote sustainable living practices. Coding can create games and other interactive content that teaches people about environmental issues.

What are 3 positive ways coding has changed the world?

At the most basic level, coding translates instructions and processes into a computing language. This allows us to create apps and software, build websites and online shops, play video games, publish e-books and much more.

Come and discover how to teach your students the basics of coding and computational thinking, that is, how to think like a computer and be able to invent video games, your own personal apps, write an algorithm and more. In this innovative and fun course, we will show you how to introduce coding in a simple way through games, and unplugged activities.

LEARNING GOALS:

  • develop a new know-how and skills needed to apply effectively Coding at school
  • explore several apps and platforms, being able to use the most suitable and appropriate according to different needs and contexts
  • develop coding lessons with a variety of digital but also unplugged tools
  • experiment interactive methodologies to engage and motivate all students
  • widening perspectives and creative thinking in the cooperation teacher-students

Program / Objectives

INTRO/METHOD

Like all our programs, the present one is flexible and adaptable to special requests, depending on the subject taught or on the starting level of the participant.

Furthermore, in line with the JUMP Academy method, our courses are based on a strategic balance between formal and non-formal education, indoor and outdoor education and the team takes care of a very important aspect of international mobility which is the intercultural learning which we develop with short excursions and facilitating the interaction with local partners, businesses and citizens of our territory. Each local context has its own economy so it’s always useful, in training programs, to get in contact with concrete examples (experiential learning and real based learning).

We always try to connect our learners to local teachers and students to cooperate in developing innovation and networking for future projects. If possible, inside the program, a morning is spent inside a local school, visiting, observing, and cooperating in the realization of one or more lessons. The proposed program JUMP works, in European dimension and with an international spirit, at the local level and, according to the period of the training along the year and the weather, it is possible to change some sessions and add visits and meetings, in cooperation with our network of partners including schools involved in European projects).

Locations

JUMP is based in Soverato (Catanzaro province), on the Jonian coast but the association cooperates with local partners and institutions of the surroundings towns and cities. Calabria region represents the deep South of Italy, known for the tropical climate and sandy beaches but also famous tall and green mountains.

During our trainings we also aim to make participants discovering the region, especially those old towns rich of culture, traditions, castles, small churches, narrow streets, colourful balconies, tropical flowers and local farms.

The nearest airport to Soverato is Lamezia Terme (SUF), 30 minutes far away from Soverato.

Our pick up is organized ONLY from and to this airport which is the biggest and the most important, connected to all the other cities in Italy and in Europe.

Many people like to stop in Rome or in Naples and take a train which is also comfortable and the journey along the coast is also pleasant (you see all the South).

Villa Gabriella Internation

JUMP proposes to participants to be lodged by Villa Gabriella International B&B managed by our local partner C.T.E. CENTRO TERRITORIALE EUROPEO company (https://closertoeurope.com/). The Villa has 7 big and comfortable rooms continuously renovated but also preserving the typical “old times” atmosphere of a very local house of Southern beach place. The Villa has many spaces for activities, a training room, the breakfast room, the terrace and flowers all around. It’s located in a peaceful and safe district called “Cittadella” surrounded by hills of olive trees and other Villas. JUMP created a network of other similar b&b for when participants are more than 12, in order to assure the same quality with an amazing breakfast, all comforts and an international environment. Villa Gabriella is also the JUMP headquarters for the general management of our activity. The Villa is the meeting point for all guests during all trainings and it’s where we realize all project activities.

LODGING WITH US IN SOVERATO

Thanks to the cooperation with the C.T.E. company Jump provides lodging in 2 villas and if the groups are big, we have cooperation with all the owners of b&b and bigger hotels.

A brand new local partner, an innovative company offering touristic services with another vision and perspective. Discover Calabria and enjoy the local culture making experiential learning and practical labs with local people, but also simply a more sustainable tourism at local level.

The transfer from and to the airport is provided by C.T.E

EXTRA ACTIVITIES

During our trainings and mobility projects, while hosting our international guests from all over the world, JUMP involves the local network of partners and organizes different types of activities. This is not simply tourism, this is local development. This is JUMP Educational Tourism in Calabria region!
