The evolving face of bullying in digital era

Cyberbullying, a modern form of bullying amplified by social media, is a serious threat to young people. Unlike traditional bullying, which often isolates victims within a group, cyberbullying follows them everywhere, even into their homes.
Bullies can hide behind anonymity, and harmful content can be shared globally, making it impossible for victims to escape by changing schools. Cyberbullying takes many forms, common examples are:

•     Threats and insults, rude comments, and mockery.

•     Sharing a victim’s private information, such as videos, photos, or even intimate details.

•     Spreading gossip intended to harm the victim.

•     Exclusion and isolation, for example, creating online groups that exclude the victim.

•     Identity theft: creating fake profiles to damage a person’s reputation or send offensive messages.

This pervasive issue is sadly escalating, with a 2024 WHO/Europe study revealing that one in six European schoolchildren experiences it.

The consequences can be devastating, including depression, anxiety, low self-esteem, insomnia, and suicidal thoughts, as well as academic decline and difficulty forming relationships and trusting others.
Fortunately, unlike traditional bullying, cyberbullying leaves digital traces, which makes prosecution possible. Furthermore, there’s a growing movement to raise awareness about this phenomenon, encouraging open discussion and educating new generations about emotions and empathy.

Parents and schools are essential in preventing cyberbullying.  Parents should actively communicate with their children, monitor their online activity, and teach respect. Schools must provide preventative education and foster inclusive, safe environments.

If you are experiencing cyberbullying, preserve the evidence, avoid responding to provocations, talk to a trusted adult (such as a teacher or family member), and seek psychological help to cope with the situation. Remember, you are not the problem!
