Perhaps teachers are not resisting AI. Perhaps they are resisting bad professional development.
A systematic review by Aljemely (2024) found that motivation is one of the biggest challenges in preparing teachers to use AI. But motivation does not emerge from another slideshow about ChatGPT or a rushed demonstration of the latest tools.
Teachers need training that is:
Relevant to their subjects
Adapted to their existing skills
Grounded in pedagogy and ethics
Supported by institutional guidance
Built around hands-on experimentation
Extended beyond ChatGPT to a wider understanding of AI
The review also identifies privacy concerns, unreliable outputs, reduced human interaction, limited institutional support, and lack of guidance as barriers.
So when teachers hesitate, we should not immediately call them resistant or technologically deficient. Their hesitation may be professional judgement at work.
