The experience of Alvaro. Job shadowing in Soverato on SEN Education with JUMP

In the frame of the actual Erasmus Programme, JUMP organizes job shadowing for teachers. Here we report about the experience of Alvaro, a special education teacher coming from A Coruña in Spain, representing our long term partner, Liceo La Paz.

We will tell the story of this special week through the direct words of Rosanna.

He came in the week between 07 and 13 of July 2024 to attend a weekly program tailored on his professional figure, to learn and discover how we in Italy develop the so called Education for Spacial Needs students. Nowadays also know as SEN Education. JUMP gave the task to Ms Rosanna Corradino, a local new teacher who has been working in the last years at the “IC M. Squillace-Montepaone”.

I am Rosanna Corradino, a support teacher in a secondary school, and on 9-11 July I had the pleasure of having a job shadowing experience with a Spanish colleague, Alvaro, who is also a support teacher. They were three very stimulating and educational days for both of us, in which the more strictly theoretical part alternated with outdoor activities and guided tours.

The one-to-one relationship allowed a constant comparison and in-depth analysis between the Italian and Spanish school systems. After examining some general aspects of the Italian school system, special attention was given to the value of inclusion, to the methodologies and didactic and technological tools used to foster an inclusive classroom climate and to support the learning processes of pupils with special educational needs.

The job shadowing experience ended very positively on Thursday, 11 July, thanks to a guided tour at the Institutes ‘M. Squillace’ in Montepaone and IPPSEOA in Soverato.

The visit allowed Alvaro to get to know the various school premises (classrooms, laboratories, kitchens, bar rooms) intended for the inclusion of all pupils and to see the classrooms specifically dedicated to pupils with special educational needs, such as the multi-sensory classroom. During these three days of constant comparison, similarities and differences, as well as pros and cons of the Italian and Spanish school systems, of public and public schools, emerged, especially with regard to the inclusion of Special Educational Needs.

This is also because the field of Special Educational Needs has become very broad, encompassing many other disorders besides disability, and this has diversified the educational process in the various schools in Europe. Thanks to the European Recommendations, we are well on the way to full inclusion of people with special educational needs, not only in the school environment but also in the social and working environment.

Thanks Rosanna for your work.

The feedback of Alvaro says it all: great job!

“Thank you very much for sending me all the information and photos from the course. I felt at home and have been very happy during these days. Thank you also for your kind words of appreciation, you are a super team

Best regards! Alvaro”
