The Digital Challenge: Fighting Disinformation Through Digital Citizenship Education

Since 2016, Citizenship Education in the digital era has been at the core of many European meetings and conference sessions held by the Council of Europe. The 26th session of the Standing Conference, held in Strasbourg in September 2023, designated 2025 as the “European Year of Digital Citizenship”.

In alignment with the objectives of the European Year of Digital Citizenship, the Fake News Busters project’s key goal is to empower young people to become responsible and informed digital citizens. With a strong focus on fighting disinformation and fostering critical awareness, the project’s aims include:

  • increasing digital readiness and resilience,
  • enhancing media literacy and critical thinking skills
  • developing tailored training programmes and digital safety guidelines, and
  • promoting ethical and active participation in the digital sphere.

As a project partner, JUMP is responsible for communication, the training of students and teachers, and the dissemination of project results. To this end, from May 5th to 9th, in the framework of Europe Day celebrations and during the 9th edition of the Euro.Soul Festival held in Soverato (Calabria, Italy), JUMP actively disseminated the core messages and content of the Fake News Busters project to a wide international audience. Indeed, the event welcomed Erasmus+ delegations of students and teachers from France, Germany, Romania, Greenland, and Bulgaria.

A highlight of the week was the plenary session on May 6th at ITE Calabretta school in Soverato, where JUMP introduced students and educators to the Council of Europe’s initiative: the European Year of Digital Citizenship 2025. The plenary session focused on the concept of Digital Citizenship Education and its crucial role in navigating today’s fast-paced digital world which offers numerous opportunities, yet also hides significant risks.

Thanks to the Fake News Busters project JUMP reaffirms its commitment to building a digitally aware and resilient generation of young Europeans. By promoting Digital Citizenship Education at local, national, and international levels, the aim is to contribute to shaping a more informed, critical, and participatory society.
