During the week 7-14 July 2024 JUMP hosted some participants from Spain and, the session I conducted focused on blending Stream (Science, Technology, Reading, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) with critical thinking. This integration aimed at providing students with a holistic understanding of different subjects whilst promoting the necessary problem-solving skills.
During the session, we discovered how each component of Stream provides a sturdy educational experience. Science and technology yield essential knowledge and innovative tools, whereas, engineering encourages actual implementation. Maths supports logical thinking and problem-solving skills, reading improves comprehension and communication skills, and Art promotes creativity and emotional intelligence.
To show the benefits of Stream education, I invited the teachers to prepare a Stream lesson plan, and then carry it out as if they were the students. The participants were assigned the task of solving an unmet need on behalf of a Toy Company This task required them to apply scientific principles, engineering skills and, math concepts. Furthermore, the use of critical thinking, and the ability to express their ideas creatively through the arts. This overall approach not only engaged the participants in different subject areas but also pointed out the connection between different fields. A second activity based on the use of critical thinking was also carried out, where the participants were asked to choose a limited number of items to bring with them in order to survive on a deserted island where they had no indication of the time they would have to spend on the island before being rescued. A final activity included a debate.
Feedback received after the session showed that the participants had found the approach engaging and thought-provoking. They also enjoyed the chance to explore real-world problems and realized the value of integrating different disciplines. Moreover, they also noticed that student’s motivation and participation would increase by applying this method, as well as improve their problem-solving skills.
In conclusion, the session empathised the benefits of a multi-disciplinary approach in education today. Finally, as educators, our objective is to continue exploring innovative teaching methods that not only inspire but also empower our students whilst preparing them for the challenges and opportunities that the future holds for them.
