When it comes to high tech, Europe still lags far behind the US. In the global ranking of the world’s most valuable companies, six of the top ten are American tech giants in IT or communications, and Europe has no equivalent.
Some countries are starting to catch up. In Poland, a quarter of the 100 most valuable companies are in the tech sector. But Europe’s most industrialised economies – Germany, France and the UK – are still dominated by finance, consumer goods and industry rather than high tech.
