Mastering english tenses through speaking and language games

Learning English tenses can often feel overwhelming, especially for non-native speakers who must navigate differences between their own language system and English grammar. To address this challenge in a practical and engaging way, on 20-21 May I held a Joyful English session focusing especially on spoken communication, interactive learning, and language games.

The course aimed not only to improve grammatical accuracy but also to help participants gain confidence in real-life communication. Rather than relying on traditional lectures and repetitive exercises, the training emphasised active participation, collaboration, and spontaneous speaking activities.

A practical approach to english tenses through games

During the two-day program, we explored the main English tenses through meaningful  communication tasks. After a quick look at the grammar rules, we played language games to put them into practice immediately. By doing so, we avoided memorising rules in isolation, on the contrary, we practiced using tenses naturally in speaking situations. Grammar was introduced through context, dialogues, storytelling, and interactive challenges.

The use of language games has the power to transform grammar practice into a dynamic and enjoyable experience. We played grammar and speaking board games, grammar sea battle, scattergories and used other materials that helped to expand vocabulary knowledge and use, such as pictures, flashcards and short texts.

The playful atmosphere also increased motivation and participation throughout the course.

Focus on speaking skills improvement

A central objective of the course was improving oral fluency and confidence, that is what normally adults look for in a language course. In fact, many participants report that they understand grammar rules but struggle to use them spontaneously in conversation.

For this reason, the course usually prioritises speaking practice in every session. Participants are encouraged to discuss topics, solve problems, describe experiences or even make up stories, using target tenses.

Pronunciation, fluency, and communication strategies are always integrated into all activities. Mistakes are treated as part of the learning process, helping participants develop greater confidence when speaking English.

Positive outcomes

By the end of this two-day training, the course showed that learning grammar does not need to be passive or intimidating. Through games, interaction, and meaningful communication, English tenses can become both accessible and enjoyable.

This intensive program highlighted the value of communicative teaching methods and confirmed that active speaking practice remains one of the most effective ways to improve language proficiency.
