From 14th to 16th July, I held a Joyful English course that brought together a very diverse and dynamic group eager to strengthen communication skills. The group consisted of three teachers from Poland and four administrative professionals from Martinique, each with varying levels of English proficiency, but all with the same aim of improving their use of the language
The primary aim of the course was to improve participants’ confidence and competence in using English, with a particular focus on verb tenses and speaking ability. Given the different language levels within the group, it was essential to create an inclusive learning environment where everyone felt comfortable participating and contributing.
To achieve this, I structured the lessons around interactive and collaborative activities. Rather than relying on traditional lecture-based methods, the course emphasized active engagement through pair and group work. This approach allowed participants to support one another, share knowledge, and build confidence in a safe and encouraging setting.
Among the activities, “Grammar Battle” proved to be both educational and entertaining, helping learners reinforce their understanding of verb tenses in a competitive yet friendly atmosphere. “Scattergories” encouraged quick thinking and vocabulary recall, while information gap activities fostered meaningful communication and problem-solving.
Participants also engaged in conversation activities in pairs, designed to help them get to know each other better. These interactions culminated in presentations where each participant introduced their partner, practicing both listening and speaking skills in a practical context. Additionally, speaking cards centered on travel topics stimulated discussion, allowing learners to express personal experiences and opinions.
All activities were intentionally designed to be carried out in pairs or small groups. This structure not only reduced the pressure often associated with speaking in a foreign language but also promoted collaboration and mutual support among participants.
Despite the group’s heterogeneity, this diversity became one of the course’s greatest strengths. Different perspectives, experiences, and language levels enriched the learning process, creating a vibrant and supportive atmosphere. By the end of the course, participants had not only improved their English skills but also built meaningful connections with one another.
This experience once again confirmed my belief that inclusive, interactive, and learner-centered approaches are key to effective language teaching, especially in diverse adult learning contexts.
