Intercultural dialogue and Culturally Responsive Teaching: training for educators in today’s diverse society

During the week of March 30 to April 6, three teachers from Poland participated in a three-morning training session about “Communication in the New Multicultural Society”. The training aimed to enhance their understanding of communication and build practical skills for applying intercultural communication effectively in today’s globalized world.

On the first day, the participants visited the ITE Calabretta technical school in Soverato, where they exchanged ideas and teaching practices with Italian colleagues and observed hands-on activities related to Global Education, carried out with Portuguese and Italian students involved in another Erasmus+ programme. This session offered them valuable insight into the evolving context of globalization, where everyday communication takes place, and allowed them to engage directly in intercultural communication within a multicultural environment.

The second day was dedicated to exploring the strong connection between culture and communication. Participants reflected on their own cultural identities, examined how culture shapes their worldview, and developed a deeper awareness of the value of cultural diversity. Developing socio-cultural awareness is a crucial first step toward engaging effectively in intercultural communication, helping to reduce cultural and linguistic barriers.

In the afternoon participants were involved in nature-based activities, experiencing mindful connection and emotional engagement with nature. This was an example of the importance of creating a safe and inclusive space beyond the school’s walls, where students from different backgrounds can feel accepted and feel to express themselves, reducing the fear of making mistakes and learning in a low-pressure environment.

On the third day, the session opened with a discussion on cultural identity and stereotypes, facilitated through an activity involving national symbols from different European countries. The focus then shifted to Culturally Responsive Teaching, presented as an innovative pedagogical approach that embraces students’ cultural references as a foundation for effective learning.

Overall, the experience highlighted the importance of openness, empathy, and adaptability in today’s interconnected world, key skills that will support their ongoing professional growth and positively impact their students’ educational journeys.
