Long and Magerko define AI literacy as a set of competencies that enables people to critically evaluate AI, communicate and collaborate effectively with it, and use it as a tool in everyday life and work.
The paper moves AI literacy far beyond knowing how to use an AI tool. It includes understanding what AI is, recognizing its strengths and limits, knowing how machine learning uses data, identifying the human role behind AI systems, and examining issues such as bias, privacy, transparency, misinformation, and accountability.
The authors organize AI literacy around five important questions:
What is AI?
What can AI do?
How does AI work?
How should AI be used?
How do people perceive AI?
They also stress that teaching AI should be accessible to learners without advanced coding or mathematics. Effective AI literacy education should use clear explanations, hands-on activities, relevant examples, social interaction, and opportunities for learners to question how AI systems work.
