In november 2024 we welcomed 4 Romanian teachers who learned with us about MIL and Videomaking. Being teachers in the digital age it’s important to develop readyness fighting against disinformation, misinformation, fake news. Here the technical report of the session by their trainer, Francesco Menniti, professional videomaker and media education for JUMP.
Day 1
The first day began with an ice-breaking activity designed to foster a collaborative and relaxed atmosphere among participants. This was followed by an introductory session in the classroom where participants shared their backgrounds and expectations for the course.
The morning then delved into the theoretical aspects of MIL, sparking active engagement and meaningful questions from the educators. After a short break, an interactive activity consolidated the morning’s lessons and set the stage for the next topic: the fundamentals of videomaking.
The transition to videomaking theory captured everyone’s attention, increasing participation and enthusiasm. During this session, we discussed the basics of creating videos and began brainstorming ideas for the projects the educators wanted to produce, establishing a clear direction for the upcoming days.
In the afternoon, we headed outdoors for a walking tour around the picturesque streets and landscapes of Soverato. This hands-on session allowed participants to practice filming, capturing scenic views, local curiosities, and even interacting with residents. It was a creative and stimulating exercise that helped bridge theory and practice.
Day 2
The second day began with the completion of the videomaking theory lessons. Participants were introduced to the mechanics of the video editing software CapCut, learning its main features and how to use them effectively.
During this session, participants expressed some challenges they faced in their video projects, such as framing and scene editing. Together, we tackled these issues with practical solutions and encouraged them to apply their new skills.
In the afternoon, we made the most of the sunny weather by filming on location. From the Soverato waterfront to the bustling main streets, participants explored the area, gathered footage, and conducted interviews with locals. This session further fueled their creativity and storytelling abilities.
Day 3
The final day focused on video editing, introducing some advanced features of CapCut. The educators worked independently on their projects, creating two videos using the techniques they had learned throughout the course.
The results were remarkable. By the end of the day, the participants presented their videos to the group, showcasing their ability to produce a complete project on their own. Their work received praise and admiration, reflecting the skills and confidence they had gained over the three days.
Conclusion
The course concluded with resounding success, leaving participants with a deeper understanding of Media and Information Literacy and practical videomaking skills. By blending theory with fieldwork, the course transformed ideas into tangible outcomes, making the experience both educational and inspiring.
