Content and Language Integrated Learning: A Week of CLIL Training with JUMP

JUMP invited Ms Jess Mc Murray from Oxford – one of the mayor experts of CLIL as trainer in November 10-16, 2025.

The association welcomed a Slovenian teacher who took part in the training course titled “CLIL in Practice: A Training Course for the Creation of Interactive Lessons in Foreign Languages.”

But what exactly is CLIL?

CLIL is a combination of subject matter and language. In fact, the acronym stands for Content and Language Integrated Learning.
The goal is to use content to learn the language and to use language to learn the content. CLIL is a method in which non-linguistic subjects are taught through a language that is not native to the students.

On the first day, the lesson focused on understanding the basics — the scaffolding of CLIL — providing reasons for its application and highlighting the difference between hard and soft CLIL.

On the second day, the teacher explored the Four Cs Framework:

  • Content: the subject knowledge connected to curricular areas such as science, history or geography.

  • Communication: using language as a tool to learn content while simultaneously learning the language itself.

  • Cognition: promoting thinking skills such as reasoning, creativity, and hypothesising.

  • Culture: integrating language and content through social and educational contexts, fostering understanding of different perspectives and shared knowledge.

On the final day, participants analysed the practical application of the CLIL method through exercises and the development of new lesson plans for CLIL-based teaching.
Throughout the course, the teacher developed the ability to rethink content and teaching strategies: CLIL encourages growth and supports both organisational and mindset change, multiplying benefits.
