CLIL IS PRACTICE. A very new and innovative session with Kaja from Poland

From the 7th to the 9th July I had the pleasure of delivering a three-day CLIL course for an international participant. My trainee was a History, Social Studies, and Politics teacher from Poland who was eager to deepen her knowledge of innovative methodologies for integrating language learning into subject teaching.

The course was designed to provide both theoretical foundations and practical strategies for implementing CLIL in the classroom. During the first lesson, we took a look at the origins, the pedagogical and psychological theories, and the EU’s interest in implementing this methodology and in promoting the study of foreign languages in schools. After discussing the theory, we explored the key principles of CLIL, focusing on the 4Cs Framework, Content, Communication, Cognition, and Culture, and how these elements can enrich students’ learning experiences.

A significant part of the training was dedicated to designing engaging CLIL lessons tailored to the humanities. Together, we analysed authentic materials, developed language-support strategies, and created classroom activities that encourage critical thinking while promoting language development. Particular attention was given to adapting historical and political topics so that students can access complex content through meaningful communication in English.

The sessions were highly interactive and collaborative. We exchanged teaching experiences, compared educational practices in Italy and Poland, and reflected on the opportunities and challenges of using CLIL in different school contexts. These discussions highlighted the value of international cooperation and demonstrated how educators can learn from one another despite differences in curricula and educational systems.

The trainee actively participated in workshops, lesson planning activities, and reflective discussions, showing great enthusiasm and professionalism throughout the course. By the end of the training, we had developed some CLIL lesson ideas and practical resources to use in her classrooms.

Beyond the professional development aspect, the course also fostered intercultural dialogue. Sharing perspectives on history, citizenship education, and democratic values enriched our conversations and reinforced the importance of promoting European cooperation through education.

Holding this three-day CLIL course was a rewarding experience both professionally and personally. It was inspiring to work with a dedicated colleague who is committed to enhancing students’ learning through innovative teaching approaches. It was a mutually enriching experience.
