CLIL + Artificial Intelligence, a powerful new approach for language improvement

During the week 11-15/11/2024 JUMP developed a new type of training with a totally different structure. The first days of the week were organized in 2 different schools, the I.P.S.S.E.O.A. and the I.I.S. “Guarasci-Calabretta”. In particular the morning in the second school gave a strong impact to the learning process for 5 German language teachers on CLIL with the added value of using Artificial Intelligence.

The trainer Erika Gerardini didn’t explain the theoretical aspects of CLIL before. She invited the teachers, 2 women and 3 men, with a long term experience as educators, to observe and let themselves be involved in activities which were designed to combined language learning, development of communication skills and use of an AI tool. All this is a very normal class of V graders of the secondary school level (17-18 years old).

The lesson was focused on European poets representing  “Romanticism”. In particular Italian, German and English poets. Students received small papers with a name of a poet written on it. They had to start a conversation with the German teachers, divided in 5 groups on the period of Romanticism and introduce themselves. Then take 5 minutes to research online and read as fast as possible as much information they found on the poet, then share like a dialogue.

The activity was animated step by step by the trainer who opened in the big screen an AI tool – a so-called chatboat for the chat with any kind of character. At that moment students could choose with whom of their poets start a chat online.

The time was short and not enough for all students but it was fun, interesting and interactive. Italian students couldn’t speak in English with German teachers who are bilingual. This was a very important opportunity for them.

This type of lesson combines formal and non formal education, development research based of new knowledge in internet, elaboration of the same through spontaneous dialogue in English and use of AI for collective learning.

JUMP is used to develop innovation and bring international experiences in local schools in the area. It’s part of our work to research and experiment. It is not easy to combine the formal curriculum with Non Formal methods and use of technology which is not the standard one. Hopefully we count with a very good cooperation with schools, they trust us and teachers are open minded.

Thanks to the German team and to the I.I.S. Guarasci-Calabretta as usual.
