Non-Formal Education (NFE) is the quiet revolution of learning. Defined by the Council of Europe as “any organised educational activity outside the established formal system that is intended to serve identifiable learning clienteles and learning objectives,” NFE lives where creativity, personal growth, and real-world engagement intersect.
While formal education often feels like a train on a fixed track, NFE is more like a sailing boat: guided by direction, but adaptable to wind, waves, and the unique skills of each crew member. It empowers learners to explore, reflect, and engage at a deeper level—bridging the gap between theoretical knowledge and real-world experience.
In an ever-changing world, NFE doesn’t just complement education—it can transform it.
When Theory Meets Sun, Sea, and Stories
From April 27th to May 4th, 2025, we welcomed a passionate delegation of teachers from Romania to JUMP in Soverato for a full immersion into the world of NFE.
The week kicked off with a sunlit walk through the vibrant streets of Soverato. The teachers weren’t just tourists—they were cultural explorers, absorbing the rhythm of the Mediterranean, meeting locals, and getting a taste of learning by living.
In the afternoon, the atmosphere shifted from movement to mindfulness. Through playful NFE games and the calming creation of mandalas, participants began experiencing firsthand what it means to learn through experience, emotion, and group dynamics.
NFE in a Fast-Moving World
The next morning opened with an essential question: Why NFE now?
Through interactive presentations and vivid metaphors, we examined today’s educational landscape. In a world of constant notifications, social media storms, and algorithm-fed attention spans, traditional education often feels like trying to fit lightning into a bottle.
We explored the metaphor of students as factory workers—a system designed for another era, now misaligned with the pace and complexity of modern life. But the twist? These aren’t passive workers anymore. They’re designers, creators, innovators—if only given the chance. NFE, we argued, doesn’t just unlock potential—it redefines the very process of learning itself.
From Ideas to Action
The seeds where planted, so the next day was all about cultivation.
Teachers were guided through a step-by-step framework to design their own NFE courses—turning great ideas into impactful projects. The hands-on highlight? A storytelling scavenger hunt, where children discovered story clues around their environment, read passages aloud, and reflected on how the story connected to their own lives.
We didn’t just test for comprehension; we asked: How did it make you feel? When did you feel like this before? What does this story teach us about ourselves?
Each activity was checked against the essential NFE pillars: student-centered design, value-based learning, holistic approaches, and the group as a source of knowledge. And guess what? Every single one was present.
Afternoon Adventures and Forest Reflections
In the afternoon, teachers enjoyed more outdoor NFE activities—combining laughter, light physical activity, and shared reflection. These moments sparked deep conversations about how to form stronger bonds with students and how learning can be joyful without losing depth.
We ended the day in stillness. Beneath a canopy of trees, with the wind as our soundtrack, we practiced a guided mindfulness body-scan meditation. For many, it was a moment of true connection—between mind, body, place, and purpose.
In a world that often prizes grades over growth, NFE dares to ask a different question: Who are you becoming while you learn?
It helps students develop skills, attitudes, and competencies that matter—communication, empathy, creativity, critical thinking—not just facts to repeat in exams. It bridges the need to learn with the need to live—inviting students and teachers alike to be fully present in the time and world they inhabit.
NFE doesn’t replace formal education—it reawakens it. Like a key that opens a hidden room in an old house, it reveals new possibilities for connection, meaning, and transformation.
