Artificial Intelligence as a “Digital Friend”

In recent years, Artificial Intelligence has become increasingly present in everyday life. In Italy, many people use chatbots and virtual assistants not only to obtain information, but also to have conversations, ask for advice, or simply feel listened to. For this reason, some experts describe AI as a sort of “digital friend.”From a psychological point of view, talking to an AI system can create a feeling of comfort. Responses are immediate, available at any time, and free from personal judgment. This can be reassuring, especially for people experiencing stress, anxiety, or loneliness. One of the most interesting psychological phenomena connected to this behavior is anthropomorphism, which is the tendency to attribute human characteristics to technological tools.

When a chatbot communicates in a natural and empathetic way, users unconsciously perceive it as more familiar and “human.”In Italy, this phenomenon is particularly common among young people, who use AI to study, organize work, or receive support in daily activities. However, many experts emphasize that Artificial Intelligence cannot replace real human relationships, because it does not possess genuine emotions or true understanding of human feelings. The relationship between people and AI shows how technology can influence not only communication and work, but also the psychological and social aspects of modern society.
