A Remarkable Internship Journey in Soverato – The experience by Mihaila Mitevska as an Intern

Three months ago, I arrived in Soverato, a sun-soaked town in the south of Italy, not knowing exactly what to expect. What I found was more than just a professional placement—it was a cultural and personal adventure that expanded my perspective and sharpened my skills. I had the unique opportunity to work in a professional accounting firm under the guidance of a commercialista—a licensed Italian accountant and tax advisor. Though a one-person firm, the experience was anything but small; it provided me with deep, hands-on insight into the workings of the Italian financial and legal system.

Coming from a multidisciplinary background, I hold a Bachelor’s degree in Business Informatics, which blends engineering principles with business systems and digital technologies. My professional path has taken me into the field of Talent Acquisition, where I work as a Recruiter, connecting people with the right opportunities and helping companies build strong teams. At 23 years old, I’m now pursuing a Master’s degree in Business Administration, with the goal of expanding my understanding of strategy, leadership, and international business. This blend of technical, human-centered, and managerial experience gave me a unique perspective during the internship—helping me appreciate not only the numbers behind a business, but the systems and people that drive it.

During my time there, I became familiar with various aspects of Italian economic laws and procedures. I worked with essential national systems such as the Agenzia delle Entrate, and learned to process tax declarations like the 730, DSU, ISEE, and RPF. I also gained experience in issuing invoices, balancing accounts for both corporate clients and private individuals, and executing payments—using professional software like GB.

One of the key figures in my internship was Nancy, the assistant of the commercialista. Her patience, knowledge, and continuous support played a vital role in helping me understand the workflow. She guided me through every task, ensuring that I grasped not only the “how” but also the “why” behind each procedure.

Of course, there were challenges. Communication wasn’t always easy, as most of the team spoke limited English. But rather than seeing it as a setback, I treated it as an opportunity. I began picking up Italian and found myself slowly understanding instructions, joining conversations, and becoming more confident in a multilingual workplace. That language barrier became a bridge to new skills and connections. Immersing myself in the language and culture added a unique dimension to both my professional development and personal growth.

Outside the office, life in Soverato was equally fulfilling. It’s a small but vibrant town with a relaxed atmosphere, stunning coastal views, and incredibly welcoming people. Along with my friends and fellow trainees, we explored much of the region and embraced the Italian way of life. Our transport to and from a nearby town where we practiced was well organized, allowing us to stay connected and focused.

Our internship was made possible by the incredible support of the JUMP organization. The team has been instrumental in organizing every aspect of our stay—from accommodation and transport to cultural activities and mentorship. Their professionalism, experience, and dedication to international exchange are truly commendable, and being part of one of their projects has been a genuine pleasure.

In addition to our core internships, we had the chance to support the JUMP organization with some of their local and international projects. One highlight of the experience was participating in JUMP’s community initiatives. We helped organize a five-day festival celebrating the anniversary of the European Union. From decorating public spaces to engaging with young participants (aged mostly between 10 and 19), and visiting schools and local businesses, we played a hands-on role in bringing people together. It was a chance to step outside the engineering world and be part of something bigger—connecting cultures, building friendships, and learning how to coordinate a public event.

Thanks to JUMP and the wonderful people we’ve met here, we’ve quickly adapted and created a fulfilling life during our stay. The blend of professional learning, cultural immersion, and community involvement has made this experience deeply rewarding. We’ve developed lasting friendships, embraced the Italian lifestyle, and truly fallen in love with the food, the rhythm of daily life, and the warmth of the local culture. What once felt foreign has now become a part of us.

This internship has not only enhanced my professional skills but also broadened my horizons in ways I couldn’t have imagined. I am truly grateful for the opportunity and would highly recommend this experience to anyone seeking both professional development and cultural enrichment. I leave Soverato with unforgettable memories, practical experience, and a greater sense of confidence for the future. For anyone considering a traineeship abroad, I can only say: go for it. You’ll grow in ways you can’t plan for—and discover strengths you didn’t know you had.
